Ask My Little Buddha

I recently learned about the scary chemicals that are in standard mattresses. Do you know of any sites where I can learn more? And do you recommend any organic mattresses that are on the cheaper side of expensive?

Organic mattresses are a great investment. Young children sleep an average of 13 hours for the first few years of life, it’s reassuring to know they’re sleeping on a safe mattress.

Conventional mattresses are often made of petroleum based polyester, nylon and polyurethane (PU) foam that especially when new may give off harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with upper respiratory problems.

Some mattresses also are pretreated with water-repellents and flame retardants that are likely human carcinogens according to an EPA advisory panel.

Organic mattresses are made from natural latex, organic cotton and organic wool. The wool acts as a natural flame retardant so no additional chemicals are needed to keep kids safe. Wool also repels dust mites that may cause allergies.

Organic crib mattresses can be expensive, generally between $230 and $500. For toddlers, you can go with the least expensive 100% natural latex organic mattress. It’s firm and just fine. For babies, always choose extra firm.

We also recommend getting a wool puddle pad ($75 to $100) to protect the mattress from moisture.

Organic mattresses are expensive, but we’ve found they last a long time (and can be passed down to the next child).
