Dear Parent: Caring for Infants with Respect by Magda Gerber

Dear Parent: Caring for Infants with RespectHighlights: Dear Parent: Caring for Infants With Respect is written by Magda Gerber, the co-founder of Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE). Many RIE parent/infant group leaders recommend Dear Parent as the best place to start learning about the RIE approach.

Most important, the book outlines a conscious approach to parenting. Whether or not we decide to follow RIE, Gerber helps us think more about how we change a diaper, greet a baby after her nap, create safe boundaries for play and shape our lives with children.

Lowlights: Just the usual understanding with parenting books of taking what works for you, and seeing Gerber’s discussions as supportive ideas rather than rules to follow.

Why we like it: We reread chapters from Dear Parent each time we re-enter the newborn stage, and again when our toddlers are 12-18 months old. Her concepts help ground us in a consistent parenting approach–why and how we respect our children and ourselves.

Child’s Age: Newborn to toddler.
