You Are Your Child’s First Teacher by Rahima Baldwin Darcy
Highlights: You Are Your Child’s First Teacher: What Parents Can Do With and For Their Children from Birth to Age Six discusses how to support children’s creativity and imaginative play, often through concepts from Waldorf early childhood education.
Dancy, a mid-wife and Waldorf early childhood educator, has a compassionate, supportive tone, and speaks about parenting challenges. She’s thoughtful and offers a context for thinking about parenting decisions.
The best parts are the lists of age specific activities and books (for children and parents) at the end of each chapter.
Lowlights: We skim through chapters for helpful information, at times the discussions can feel repetitive.
Why We Like It: We pick up this book for inspiration about creative activities for young children. It’s also a good resource for getting a sense of Waldorf early childhood education and thinking about preschools in general.
Child’s Age: Birth to six years old.
