Simple Tips
“Are You Okay?”
Often when a young child is injured or frightened, “You’re okay” are the first words we say to them.
Though we’re trying to reassure the child (and ourselves), in that moment they’re not really okay.
An alternative is to ask “Are you okay?” or to let them know we understand, “I saw you hit your head on the table, it looked like that hurt”. Both are comforting and compassionate, and respectful of the child’s feelings. We’re connecting with them.
We’re also modeling empathy. Kids learn about interacting with others from how we respond to them.
Making the switch at first can feel awkward–but with young kids exploring their new motor skills we have lots of opportunities to practice.
