How We Bake with Our Kids

Baking is a great activity to do with young children. It’s often an important part of Waldorf and Montessori early education programs.

Kids like the textures of ingredients, the pouring and stirring and watching how the mixture changes. Eating a muffin they made themselves is exciting, they feel proud of what they can do.

The key to baking with kids is to pick simple recipes that can be made within their attention spans, and have a manageable clean up time for us. Also, not to care about whether the batter or dough is made just right or how much flour might spill on the floor.

For special occasions, we have been known to make a complicated recipe manageable–like grandma’s favorite chocolate birthday cake. We measure the ingredients the night before, and the next day the kids just pour and stir.

When looking for activities for toddlers and preschoolers at home, creating a baking day each week can be fun–like Tuesday is baking day. Fortunately for us, kids prefer that we circulate the same few recipes.
