Simple Tips

Post-Antibiotics Protocol

As much as we want to avoid antibiotics, sometimes they’re necessary. And we’re thankful for what they can do.

Antibiotics fight the bad bacteria but also compromise the good. They reduce the flora, the good bacteria, in the digestive track inhibiting digestion and weakening the immune system.

So when we’re done with our medicine, we rebuild with probiotics.

Our post-antibiotic protocol for us and our kids: Once we finish the antibiotics, yogurt for two weeks, acidophilus and bifidus for two months.

Yogurt once a day for adults and kids. Kids’ portion is 1/2 a regular individual sized yogurt carton.

Look for a hormone-free, organic if possible yogurt that has acidophilus and bifidus like Brown Cow.

Acidophilus and bifidus are vitamins that help heal the digestive track. They’re usually refrigerated in powder form.

For adults, we like Metagenics Ultra Dophilus DF and Ultra Bifidis DF (DF is dairy free).

We find Metagenics at Pharmaca and some alternative health practitioners. Or contact the company directly to find a local practitioner carrying their products.

For children, we use Baby JarroDophilus or Childlife Colostrum.

We follow the label dosages.

One last thought, we notice that while we’re taking antibiotics we get a jumpy, heart racing feeling. We try to balance with some Rescue Remedy, which is safe for kids too.
