Safety Guide to Children’s Personal Care Products

ewg parent's buring guide to personal care productsqThe Environmental Working Group just released a Parent’s Buying Guide for Personal Care Products.

The categories include shampoo and conditioner, body wash and liquid soap, toothpaste, sunscreen, baby wipes, lotion and moisturizer, diaper cream, baby powder and play make up.

EWG lists the products with the best scores (most non-toxic) as well as the safest picks from common brands.

It’s important to read the actual report on a product as sometimes the negative marks are for essential oils that might be fine for some and not for others. EWG does not give points for organics, and the products we use aren’t always on the lists.

The Buying Guide is most helpful in getting us to review our own products.

After starting down the path of reading everything and quickly getting tired and cranky, we scroll through, check the products we use and notice new ones that we might want to try.

We also note that in some areas, like toothpaste and sunscreen, EWG mixes children’s and adult products–we opt for the children’s version.
