Sucrose in Organic Infant Formula
Pediatricians are surprised that Similac Organic formula contains the sugar sucrose.
All formulas add sugars which babies need to digest the proteins in milk or soy. Sucrose makes the Similac formula sweeter tasting than other organic formulas like Earth’s Best and Parent’s Choice which use organic lactose. Organic lactose comes from organic milk, while sucrose is cane sugar.
The concerns about formula with sucrose are that it may harm tooth enamel more than other sugars, babies used to the sweeter taste might resist other formulas or solids, and studies suggesting they may overeat, leading to added weight the first year that can be a predictor of childhood obesity.
Researchers and doctors debate the nutritional differences between sugars, and whether sucrose does lead to children preferring sweeter foods. The use of sucrose in formula has been declining since the 1950s. In 2009, the European Union will ban formulas with sucrose, except when needed for babies with allergies.
Doctors note the confusion for parents choosing organic as a healthier option and then discovering the high sugar levels in Similac formula.
We’re reminded to read the nutrition labels of all foods more carefully. Also, discussing formulas with a pediatrician can help find the best option.
